Hoggets or Hoggits

HISTORY OF HOGGET DECANTERS. When Port is passed round the table after dinner the decanter should continue to be passed around the table after each person has been served until it reaches the place where the journey began which traditionaly is where the host sits. To make sure that bad mannered people are unable to "HOG" the Port on its journey the decanter was designed with a round bottom so that it is only able to stand upright in its own wooden base and this is kept in front of the host at the head of the table. This ensures that knowone can "HOG" the port decanter hence the name "HOGGET" or "HOGGIT" as it is also known. Our Hogget has a specially designed peg on the bottom of the decanter. This locates in the wooden base so that it does not get accidentally knocked over.
